So you got the badge and now you under a probationary evaluation for 12 months. How does a rookie best survive their probationary period? Here are 25 suggestions that will help you succeed in your first year.
- Work harder than anyone else
- Don’t complain about performing the jobs that no one else wants
- Maintain good working relationships
- Report to work early; at least a half an hour before your shift starts
- Be the last one to leave after shift
- Exhibit teamwork abilities
- Study your EMS protocols, department SOPS, department rules and regulations
- Become proficient with all department firefighting and EMS equipment
- Know where all the equipment is kept on all department emergency vehicles
- Ask a lot of questions
- Exhibit respect for all authority
- Don’t participate in department gossip
- Don’t get traffic violations
- Don’t get a DUI
- Don’t wait for someone to tell you to do something
- Know your jurisdiction’s geography
- Don’t report to work hung over
- Don’t call out sick unless you’re in the hospital
- Don’t be late
- Have extra sets of uniform
- Exhibit proper manners and etiquette when in public
- Be honest
- Know your job
- Stay in good physical condition
- And most importantly, bring some cooking knowledge, skills, and abilities to the kitchen J
